Is Color Powder Safe? Your Questions Answered

Color powder is one of the most popular additions to school color runs, Holi festivals, gender reveals, and outdoor events — and one of the most Googled questions before people order is some version of "is it actually safe?" The short answer is yes. Here's the longer answer.

What is color powder made of?

Peacock Powder is cornstarch-based, dyed with food-safe colorants. No heavy metals, no industrial dyes, no toxic chemicals. The same base ingredient is in your kitchen. That's why it's the standard choice for school events where administrators, parents, and insurance providers all need to sign off.

Is color powder safe for kids?

Yes. Cornstarch-based color powder is safe for children of all ages when used as intended — thrown at color stations, tossed in the air, or run through during a color run. It's non-toxic, biodegradable, and washes off skin and out of clothing easily.

For children with asthma or respiratory sensitivities, we recommend a light dust mask or bandana worn over the nose and mouth during the event. This is a simple precaution that lets sensitive participants enjoy the full experience without concern.

Is color powder safe to inhale?

Being around clouds of color powder during a normal color run event is not harmful to the average healthy person. You should not intentionally inhale or ingest powder, but incidental exposure during an event poses no meaningful risk to healthy participants.

If you or your child have asthma, allergies, or other respiratory conditions, take the same precaution as above — a light mask or bandana provides a practical barrier without taking away from the fun.

What if color powder gets in my eyes?

Rinse immediately with clean water. Color powder is not toxic, but like any fine particle, it can cause irritation if it gets directly in the eyes. Rinsing with water resolves this quickly in most cases. Sunglasses or safety glasses are a simple precaution for participants who are concerned, and we recommend them for volunteers working directly at color stations.

Does color powder stain clothing?

It can, depending on the fabric and how long the powder sits before washing. White clothing — the traditional choice for color runs — shows the colors beautifully and most people keep their event shirt as a memento. If you're concerned about staining, wear clothing you don't mind keeping colorful.

How do you wash color powder out of clothing?

Shake or brush off as much dry powder as possible before washing. Then machine wash in cold water. Most powder washes out completely in a single cycle. Hot water can set the dye, so stick to cold.

Does color powder stain skin or hair?

No — color powder does not stain skin. It washes off easily in the shower. If you have very light or bleached hair, you may notice a slight temporary tint after heavy powder exposure, but this rinses out with a normal shampoo.

Is color powder toxic?

No. Peacock Powder is cornstarch-based with food-safe dyes — non-toxic, biodegradable, and safe for use around children, pets, and on grass and turf. It's the same formulation used at school color runs across the country.

Does color powder wash off pavement and grass?

Yes. Cornstarch-based powder dissolves with water — a hose or sprinkler handles most outdoor cleanup. On pavement, a light rinse washes it away. On grass, a single sprinkler cycle is usually enough.

Can I see Peacock Powder's Safety Data Sheet?

Yes — our full Safety Data Sheet is available on our website. If you're a school administrator or event organizer who needs it for approval purposes, it's there and ready to share.
